Bar ‘n’ Bus is committed to providing its staff and volunteers with high quality training increasing our effectiveness and impact when working with young people. Training sessions are social and interactive, allowing time to explore issues fully and apply them to the youth work context.
L2 Award in Youth Work Principles
The L2 Award in Youth Work Principles is a nationally recognised and accredited 12-session course focusing on core understanding and skills required for youth work practice. It is ideally suited to those volunteering or working part time in a youth work setting.
The first 4 sessions of the course make up our ‘Introduction to Youth Work’ course which is essential training for all volunteers involved in Bar ‘n’ Bus work.
Course Sessions:
1. Introduction to Youth Work – Exploring the purposes and principles of youth work and its benefits and impacts
2. What Makes a Good Youth Worker? – Explore the skills, knowledge, qualities and values required for effective and compassionate youth work
3. Safeguarding Young People – Identifying the categories of abuse, their signs and symptoms and how to respond to disclosures.
4. Understanding Adolescence – Understand the changes that take place during adolescence, the influences surrounding young people and how to respond as a youth worker
5. Contexts & Models – Exploring the different models and contexts in which youth work is delivered and understanding strengths and weaknesses within approaches
6. The Youth Work Relationship – Understanding the educational nature of the youth work relationship including distance travelled, planned interventions and increasing empowerment and participation
7. Creating a Safe Environment – Understanding ways in which young people can be exploited and ways in which youth workers can promote young people’s safety.
8. E-Safety & Risk Management – Exploring young people’s safety related to social media and online engagements and learning how to manage risk in different youth work activities and contexts.
9. Boundaries, Self-Care & Personal Growth – Understanding the boundaries and limits of the youth work relationship and how youth workers can look after their own health and development
10. Stereotyping – Understanding anti-discriminatory practice, its application in youth work and exploring own prejudices and values which impact work with young people
11. Managing Challenging Behaviour – Understanding the root causes of challenging behaviour and how to respond effectively in a youth work setting
12. Young People & Their Community – Exploring the impact of the local community on the lives of young people and how to connect with the local community to increase opportunities for young people
